If you suddenly found yourself with ₹1,00,000 in your bank account today, what would be your first move? As a college student, the temptation to spend is massive. A new MacBook Pro, the latest iPhone 17, or a week-long trip to Goa—the list is endless.
I recently faced this exact dilemma. As a Computer Science student passionate about building projects (like my Space Defender game), I realized that standard financial advice doesn't apply to us. We aren't employees with a stable salary. We are students.
After weeks of research, I developed the "3-Bucket Strategy".
📊 The Visual Breakdown
Instead of just listing numbers, look at this chart. This is exactly how I am splitting my capital to ensure I stay safe while maximizing growth.
Why Not Just "Buy Stocks"?
Most investment gurus tell you to put your money in the stock market because it offers high returns (12-15%). While true, it ignores the risk timeline.
As you can see in the chart above, if you need money in 1-2 weeks or even 1-2 months, putting it in Equity (Stocks) is dangerous. Stocks are for the 3+ year bucket.
Bucket 1: The "Sleep Well" Fund (₹50,000)
Allocation: 50%
Instrument: Fixed Deposit (FD)
Risk Level: Zero
This is my safety shield. If I worry about exam fees, I can't code. This money sits in an FD. It's boring, but it's safe.
Bucket 2: The "Business Capital" (₹20,000)
Allocation: 20%
Instrument: My Own Projects
I am treating myself as a startup. I am currently working on two major projects:
1. The QR Code Project
Building a professional tool requires server costs:
- Domain Name: ₹800/year
- Hosting: ₹4,000/year
2. The AI Animation Tool
- OpenAI/Gemini API Credits: ₹5,000
- Marketing: ₹10,000
If I invest ₹20,000 in the stock market, a great year gives me ₹3,000 profit. If I invest ₹20,000 in my website and it earns ₹1,000/month from ads, that is a 60% return.
Bucket 3: The "Future Wealth" (₹30,000)
Allocation: 30%
Instrument: Nifty 50 Index Fund
This is for the "Me" of 10 years from now. I don't know how to pick individual stocks yet, so I am buying the whole market via an Index Fund.
Final Thoughts
Investing is personal. This plan lets me sleep well at night knowing I have an emergency fund while still building for my future.
